Chicago Sun Times All Area Baseball Team

The Chicago Sun Times posted their 2010 All-Area Baseball team on Tuesday....

P - Mike Foltynewicz - Minooka - 9-1 with an 0.38 ERA in 72 2/3rds innings pitched, 128 strikeouts and 28 walks.  Mike was the 19th overall pick in the 2010 MLB draft.

P - Nick Burdi - Downers Grove South - 9-0 with a 1.03 ERA in 53 1/3rd innings, 89 stikeouts and 12 walks.

P - Shane Conlon - Naperville Central - 11-0 with a 1.21 ERA in 75 innings, 112 strikeouts and 11 walks.

C - Austin Jarvis - Burlington Central - .526 BA, 15 home runs, 17 doubles, 8 triples and 76 RBI's.

1B - Joe Filomeno - St. Rita - .459 BA, 14 home runs, 11 doubles and 63 RBI's.

Naperville Central Wins IHSA Class 4A Baseball State Championship

Naperville Central High School (38-4) defeated Chicago St. Rita (32-10) 10-4 and wins the IHSA Class 4A baseball state championship.

Naperville Central took an early lead in the top of the second with two unearned runs.  In the fourth, Central struck again with two in the top of the fourth with two more unearned runs, including an interference call on the St. Rita third baseman, giving Central a 4-0 lead.  In the bottom of the fourth St. Rita struck back and tied the game at four with a double from Zach Soria, a two run homer from Mark Payton, a single from Stefano Belmonte, a walk to Joe Filomeno and a double from Anthony Zawaski.

In the top of the fifth Naperville Central put the game away by scoring five runs with six singles, a hit batter and a sac fly.  In the sixth Naperville added one more with an rbi double from Bobby Czarnowski.

Shane Colon picked up the win on the mound allowing four runs on five hits while striking out 10.

Naperville Central finished the season 38-4 while St. Rita ended it's season at 32-10.

Chatham Glenwood Wins IHSA Class 3A Baseball State Title

Chatham(Glenwood) captured the class 3A baseball state championship with an 11-1 six inning victory over DeKalb. 

The game was scoreless for the first three innings but in the fourth and then with two outs in the top of the fourth and two on, Michael Fiaush singled in the first run of the game followed by a single by Chris Sekardi to put Chatham up 2-0.  With runners on first and third, Sekardi stole second and then Jake Fulks doubled in two more to put Chatham up 4-0. 

In the fifth Chatham would tack on two more with a two rbi double from Dallas Henderson.  In the sixth Chatham put the game out of reach for DeKalb by scoring five more including a two run homer from Jake Lance.

DeKalb tried to keep playing but could only put one run up on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an rbi single from Ben Dallesasse.

Phil Maton (11-0) captured the win on the mound for Chatham allowing only four hits and striking out nine in the six inning win.

Chatham Glenwood finished the season 32-4 and DeKalb finished 27-11.

IHSA Class 3A Baseball Semi-Finals Start Friday June 11

 The IHSA Class 3A baseball semi-finals start Friday June 11th at 10:00 am with Joliet Catholic (23-14) vs. Chatham (Glenwood) (30-4).  Following the 10:00 am game Woodstock (Marian) (27-9) takes on DeKalb (26-10). 

The loser of game 1 will face the loser of game 2 in the third place game on Saturday at 9:00 am.  Following the third place game the winner of game 1 will take on the winner of game 2 in the 3A Championship game.

2010 MLB Draft - Chicago Cubs Day 2 Selections

In the first two days of the 2010 MLB draft the Chicago Cubs have selected 18 pitchers, six infielders and two catchers - and some local products.

Lake County Fielders Baseball Opens at Home on July 2nd

Zion, IL. The long-awaited arrival of the Lake County Fielders minor league baseball team is drawing near. The Fielders Stadium in Zion , IL will be ready to host Fielders games on Friday, July 2ndat Green Bay Road and Route 173. The July 2nd game will feature post-game live entertainment and fireworks.


All 15 Fielders home games currently scheduled in June will be played at the Carthage College baseball stadium in nearby Kenosha, WI. Ticket policies for those games may be found at fieldersbaseball.com or by calling the Fielders' ticket office at 847-731-8000.

"We are extremely pleased to be of assistance to the Fielders Professional Baseball team in their inaugural season," said Dr. Robert Bonn, Athletic Director of Carthage College. "Coach Augie Schmidt and his staff will have the field in excellent condition to host the first home games of their season. Carthage has experienced a great deal of success on that field and hopefully it will be a good luck charm for the Fielders."

The Fielders, co-owned by Academy Award winner and baseball enthusiast Kevin Costner, are a member of The Northern League, which plays a 100-game schedule from mid-May through early September.

"We're all very anxious for the Fielders to play in front of our hometown fans," said Fielders President Rich Ehrenreich, "We appreciate everyone's patience during the past 18 months, and look forward to Opening Day in both Kenosha and Zion."

Seth Blair Selected 46th in 2010 MLB Draft

Junior RHP Seth Blair from Arizona State University was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals as the 46th overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft.

Blair, who is from Rock Falls IL went 12-0 for the Sun Devils with a 3.06 ERA and struck out 98 in 97 innings pitched in 2010.

2010 IHSA Class 4A Semifinals Set

The IHSA Class 4A is down to four as the semifinals are set for Friday June 10th. 

Game 1 - Naperville Central will take on Stevenson at 3:00 pm and Game 2 - St. Rita will battle Huntley at 5:00 pm.  The winners will play for the IHSA Class 4A State Championship Saturday after the third place game which the losers of game 1 and game 2 will play Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Mike Foltynewicz Picked 19th Overall in MLB Draft

Right handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz is the first Illinois player selected in the 2010 MLB draft going to the Houston Astros as the 19th overall pick.

Fotynewicz a 6'4" 190 lb RHP has been clocked as high as 96 is from Minooka High School in Illinois.

Westminster Christian and Teutopolis Crowned State Baseball Champions for 1A and 2A

Class 1A
(Elgin) Westminster Christian defeated Goreville 15-5 in six innings to capture the IHSA 1A baseball state championship at Silver Cross field in Joliet.  Ryan Perez went 3-3 with 2 home runs and 7 rbi's, Frank Oliver was 4-4 with three rbi's.  Kevin Elder picked up the victory pitching 3.1 innings allowing no runs on three hits and striking out seven.  For Goreville Stefan Messmer went 2-2, Alex Stout 2-3 with an rbi and Tyler Borum went 2-3 with and rbi.

Class 2A
Teutopolis handed Harrisburg it's first loss of the season with a 5-1 victory in the 2A Championship game.  Derek (2-3) Repking doubled twice for Teutopolis and added two rbi's, Garrett Overbeck also went 2-3 with 2 rbi's.  Derek Thompson also went 2-3 at the plate along with throwing a complete game with eight strikeouts.  Dawson Monfort went 2-3 and collected the lone rbi for Harrisburg.

Illinois Wesleyan Baseball Wins NCAA Division III World Series

When Illinois Wesleyan lost to SUNY Cortland 11-10 on Monday it wound up setting up a winner take all championship game between the two teams on Tuesday. 

Illinois Wesleyan left no doubt on Tuesday capturing the Division III World Series 17-5 over SUNY Cortland and giving the Titans and the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin their first Baseball National Championship.

After Cortland scored a pair of runs early, Illinois Wesleyan scored one in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth to take a 17-2 lead after five innings.

Jeff Grodecki finished the day 5-5 with two homers, four runs scored and three rbi's.  The junior third baseman was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding Player".  Grodecki was joined on the all-tournament team by senior first baseman Casey McIntosh, sophomore catcher Mark McDermott and junior pitcher Jason Pankau.

The Titans finished the season at 31-21 and with the 21 losses became the Division III with the most losses in a season.
