SIUE Cougars Official Athletic Site: "SIUE Baseball Signs Four Standouts to NLIs
Will Join Cougars for 2011 Season"
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play baseball for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The foursome will join the Cougars for the 2011 season.
Baseball in Illinois will only show details on players from Illinois.
Associate Head Coach Tony Stoecklin announced that Chase Green (Effingham), Brian Sipe (Mt. Vernon), Ryan Daniels (St. Louis) and Mike Swinnen (Mt. Vernon) have signed with SIUE. All four will be incoming freshmen.
"We are extremely excited about this year's recruiting class," said Stoecklin.
Green is a slick-fielding middle infielder from Effingham High School who will have an opportunity to take over the shortstop position as a freshman. "He has a great understanding of how to play the position at shortstop," said Stoecklin.
Sipe, a catcher from Mt. Vernon High School, is a solid backstop and has a legitimate Division I throwing arm, according to Stoecklin. "Brian is an outstanding overall player offensively and defensively. He has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order hitter," Stoecklin said.
Swinnen is a utility player who already has set the career hits record at Mt. Vernon High School. "He understands how to hit and will hit well in college," said Stoecklin. The Cougars plan to give Swinnen an opportunity to win a starting spot in either the infield or the outfield.
