Lewis University Drops Two At Henderson State

Baseball in Illinois News

Lewis baseball fell in a pair of games at Henderson State on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers dropped the first game 4-3 and the second 7-0, in a snow shortened affair.

The Flyers got on the board first in game one with two runs in the second. Junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Zach Stetson (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher). Junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) scored from third when senior Joe Carbone (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Florida Gulf Coast University) reached on an error.

The Lewis lead didn't last long as the Reddies plated two in the bottom of the frame. Henderson State took the lead with a run in the third with a two-out rally. A home run by the Reddies' Lee Harris in the fifth gave Henderson State a 4-2 lead.

The Flyers cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Newsome that scored senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) who led the inning off with a single. Lewis managed just a Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) walk in the seventh.

Sophomore Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss with 5.2 innings of work. He gave up eight hits and four runs. His record drops to 0-1. Nathan Eller earned the win for Henderson State.

"Pat matched their starter step for step in game one," head coach Tim McDonough said. "It came down to us not getting hits with runners in base for a second straight day. When you're playing a team receiving votes in the national poll you have to take advantage of those chances."

Henderson State led the second game 2-0 before tallying five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game was stopped with one out in the inning due to snow.

The Reddies had eight hits to Lewis' six in game two. Freshman Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a pair of singles. Freshman Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) took the loss in his first collegiate start. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits in 4.0 innings. Ben Glenn got the win for Henderson State.

Henderson State improves to 6-1 while Lewis falls to 0-4.

The Flyers are off until Feb. 26 in a doubleheader with Hillsdale in Winter Haven, Fla.
