Chicago White Sox add reliever J.J. Putz -- chicagotribune.com: "Chicago White Sox add reliever J.J. Putz"
The White Sox added J.J. Putz to their roster Wednesday to strengthen their bullpen.
But will they subtract some salary to fortify their offensive needs?
General manager Ken Williams acknowledged Friday he will shift his offseason focus to improving the offense after the addition of Putz with a one-year, $3 million contract plus another $3 million in incentives based on games finished.
In case anyone is wondering, Bobby Jenks remains the closer -- for now -- while Putz and Matt Thornton share the setup duties.
"Obviously, Bobby is the closer," Williams said in a conference call. "(Matt) Thornton can do a little of both, and now you have J.J. who can do that. And everyone else fills in behind them."
One pitcher probably out of the loop is versatile reliever D.J. Carrasco, who appears unlikely to be tendered a contract by Saturday's 11 p.m. deadline.
