Heartland Baseball's David Stagg Named Pitcher of the Week

Left handed pitcher David Stagg was named the NJCAA Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 15th 2012.

Stagg earned the honors by throwing a 13-0 shutout over #18 Lincoln College last week.  Stagg struck out 11 batters, gave up only two hits and two walks over six innings.

David is a freshman at Heartland Community College in Normal Illinois and lives in West Des Moines Iowa.

Heartland Baseball Moves on to the NJCAA Division 2 World Series

After a loss in the second round of the Region 24 Baseball Tournament, the Heartland Community College baseball team worked its way through the losers bracket with five straight wins to earn a berth in the NJCAA D-II World Series.

The Hawks will face UConn-Avery Point Community College at 7:30 pm on Saturday at David Allen Memorial Park in Enid Oklahoma.  The official bracket can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

Listed are the top 10 returning 2011 NJCAA Division II players for Region 24 in Illinois.  Players are sorted by batting average.


1. Infielder Ethan Westart, Illinois Central College, .454 batting average, 10 home runs, 52 rbi's.  Ethan is from Brimfield High School and lives in Brimfield IL.

2. 1B Bobby Butvin, Lewis & Clark Community College, .450 batting average, 6 homers, 45 rbi's.  Bobby lives in Mantua OH.

3. Outfielder Rennie Troggio, Danville Area Community College, .395 batting average, 2 homers, 32 rbi's, 27 stolen bases.  Rennie lives in Lafayette IN.

4. Catcher Brent Kuper, Parkland College, .388 batting average, 2 home runs, 23 rbi's.  Brent is from Highland High School and lives in Highland IL.

5. Outfielder Zac Zellers, Heartland Community College, .387 batting average, 13 home runs, 64 rbi's, 14 stolen bases.  Zac lives in Fenton MO.

Top 20 Returning NJCAA Divison II Pitchers in Illinois

The top 20 returning pitchers at Illinois Division II junior colleges.  The list is based on 2010 statistics and a minimum of 15 innings pitched.  Three junior colleges did not post statistics last season and are not included in the list.

Top 20 Pitchers:

1.  Adam Karger, Blackhawk College, 8-1 record, 1.69 ERA, 44 K's and 16 walks in 53 1/3rd innings.  Adam is from Batavia High School and lives in Batavia IL.

2.  Brett Loeding, Elgin Community College, 0-1 record, 1.85 ERA, 27 strikeouts in 24 1/3rd innings pitched.  Brett is from Prairie Ridge High School and lives in Crystal Lake IL.

3.  Alex Van Ness, Elgin Community College, 6-0 record, 2.14 ERA in 42 innings pitched.  Alex is from Bartlett High School and lives in Bartlett IL.

Parkland Number 1 in 2010 NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll

Parkland College is the 2010 pres-eason favorite according to the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Pre-Season Poll.  The defending national champions went 49-9 last season and return three starting position players along with four key pitchers.

Ranked fourth in the pre-season poll is Kankakee Community College.  The Cavaliers rolled to a 52-14-1 record last season while finishing third in the NJCAA Division II World Series.

Heartland Community College came in at number 13 according to the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Division II pre-season poll.
