Two Naperville North Baseball Players Commited to U.S. Armed Forces Academies

Naperville North baseball players Conner Adamski and Mariano Long have both committed to attend U.S. Armed Forces Academies for the 2013 baseball seasons.

Left handed hitting catcher Conner Adamski has committed to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis MD.

Right handed pitcher Mariano Long committed to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs Colorado.

In addition to Long, Sandburg outfielder Zak Reks has also committed to attend the Air Force Academy.



Congratulations to these young men who will continue their baseball careers at these prestigious academies.

Mike Monaghan Verbally Commits to Southern Illinios Edwardsville Baseball

Pitcher/Third Baseman Mike Monahgan from Geneva High School has verbally committed to play baseball at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville according to Geneva coach Matt Holm.



 

Western Illinois Baseball Announces 12 Commitments for 2011

Western Illinois University Head Baseball Coach Mike Villano announced the commitments of 12 players for the 2011 season.

Ryan Cowhey, OF, 6-3, 202 (Oakton C.C./Orland Park, Ill.)

Cowhey is currently in his second season at Oakton. He is batting .395 (51-for-129) with 18 doubles, one triple and five home runs this season. Cowhey has also hit five home runs and is second on his team with 50 runs scored.

Matt Igara, OF, 5-11, 202 (Heartland C.C./Algonquin, Ill.)

Igara comes to Western Illinois from Heartland Community College where he is currently batting .393 (33-for-84) with nine doubles, three triples, four home runs and 38 RBI. He has also scored 34 runs and is a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts.



Dan Russell, RHP, 5-9, 175 (Illinois Central College/Henry, Ill.)

Russell comes to Western Illinois from Illinois Central College where he is currently 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA this season. In 59.0 IP he has recorded and incredible 61 strikeouts and issued just eight walks.

Alexander Zarate, RHP, 6-2, 170 (Heartland C.C./Park Ridge, Ill.)

Zarate is 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 20.2 IP his season. He has allowed just eight earned runs and has recorded 14 strikeouts while issuing only four walks.

PEORIA ILLINOIS — Richwoods’ shortstop/pitcher Peter Cunningham has committed to

Quincy University, an NCAA Division II school.

Cunningham had received interest from Bradley, Evansville and Southern Illinois.

When his athletic scholarhsip is combined with his academic scholarship, he will have a 100 percent scholarship; the fact that Cunningham’s older brother, Adam, currently plays at Quincy and, finally, he could play right away.

“It was almost a perfect fit,” said Cunningham, who has made both the Journal Star all-area football and baseball teams. “Having been there several times with Adam, I’m very comfortable with the school and the coaching staff.”

And that coaching staff, headed by Brian Unger, has big plans for Cunningham as he’ll play shortstop and pitch — a rarity in the college game.

“They’re going to throw me in there right away,” Cunningham said. “That was one of the main reasons.”

Ty Hamer, a senior at Kaneland High School has verbally committed to pitch for the University of Illinois baseball program. Although the other Division I Big Ten programs of the University of Michigan and Indiana University had also expressed interest in the 6′ 4” right handed pitcher, Hamer selected the University of Illinois following his official visit to the school.
The Illinois baseball team finished this last season with a 34-20 record, placing them in fourth place in the Big Ten, and were ranked as high as 19th in the nation. At the end of the season four players were drafted into the Major League system.
Hamer was a part of theKaneland Varsity baseball team of 2009 which recorded the highest number of wins in Kaneland history.
Ty Hamer came up through the Elburn youth baseball program and the Bulls/White Sox Academy."

Hibbing comfortable with Iowa commitment

Nick Hibbing should feel right at home at the University of Iowa.

While only a junior, the Lakes athlete has given a verbal commitment to play baseball for the Big Ten school once he graduates in 2011. His grandparents live nearby in Cedar Rapids and his parents attended Iowa State.

And then there's Iowa pitching coach Chris Maliszewski, who's a former pitcher for the Hawkeyes. When Hibbing, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, made an unofficial visit to Iowa City, Maliszewski gave him a tour of the campus.  "He really made it feel like it was home for me," Hibbing said.

When Hibbing attended a camp at Iowa last summer, he apparently felt comfortable on the mound.
"I pitched there and I struck out 9 out of 10 batters," he said. "(Iowa) said they would offer me something later in the week."  Iowa did, and the hard-throwing righty, who was throwing in the mid-80s for Lakes last spring, decided the Hawkeyes' scholarship offer was too good to pass up.

Hibbing and his baseball teammates should be good next spring. The Eagles' returners also figure to include 6-6 lefty pitcher D.J. Snelten, who's expected to sign with Minnesota today, pitcher/first baseman Travis Vanderwall, third baseball Paul Kukulka and catcher Wills Massie, who started at second base last season.

Few teams will be able to boast that it has a pair of future Big Ten pitchers.  "Our staff's going to be real strong," Hibbing said.
