Freddie Thon returns to the Joliet Jackhammers!

From Baseball in Illinois News Sources

Freddie Thon, who spent part of the 2008 season and all of 2009 with the JackHammers at first base, will play out his option in Joliet for the 2010 season. The Joliet JackHammers home opener will be on May 28th versus the Lake County Fielders, a 2010 Northern League expansion team

“Freddie plays a great game,” said JackHammers Field Manager Chad Parker. “He works hard to entertain the crowd every night.”

Thon finished the regular season in Single “A” with the Winston-Salem Warthogs before moving up to “AA” Birmingham for the Southern League playoffs.

In 2009, the JackHammers welcomed Thon back for another solid season. While in Joliet, Thon hit .302 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI’s. Six Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Inducted into HOF Class 2009

From Baseball in Illinois News Sources

The IHSBCA would like to congratulate its Hall of Fame class of 2009: Len Zabroski, Mike Riley, Paul Frerking, Bill Girling, Tom Saunches, and Blayne Smith. These men will be officially inducted on the evening of February 6 at Bo-baks Signature Events and Conference Center in Lisle. The following is a short biography of each of our newest in-ductees:

Len Zabroski—Morton East & TF South
During his 45-year career in baseball, Zabroski has coached at Thornton Fractional South, Morton East, Prairie State, and Marian Catholic. As an assistant at Morton, he was part of the State Championship team in 1970. Len has given many years of service to the IHSBCA, including hosting the annual clinic at Morton and serving as a con-ference representative for four years.

Mike Riley—Glenbard South
Riley, a long-time officer and former President of the IHSBCA, has been coaching high school baseball for 27 years, 23 of which has been as head coach. He has garnered 439 wins, five conference championships, three regional cham-pionships, and one sectional title. The Glenbard South skipper has also made three IHSBCA Summer League Final Eight appearances. His nominator, Hall of Famer Dave Elko (Oswego), said of Riley, “he is a dedicated, caring, and passionate person and coach. These qualities have made him the Hall of Famer he is, both on and off the field.”

Paul Frerking—Ridgewood
The 2010 season will mark Frerking’s 20th and final season as the head coach of Ridgewood High School. During his tenure, the Rebels amassed 491 wins, five conference championships, three regional titles, and one sectional championship. Frerking has also coached 63 all-conference players, 14 all-area players, and six all-state players. He has been an IHSBCA member for 22 years and has served as a conference representative for the past 16 seasons.

Bill Girling—Harlem
Girling, a retired coach and teacher, has been involved with Harlem baseball for the past 38 years, including a 12-year stint as the Huskie head coach. While at the helm of Harlem baseball, Girling’s teams won seven conference championships, four regional championships, and two sectional championships. According to nominator Doug Livingston, Girling worked tirelessly to promote baseball in the Rockford area, including organizing a freshman con-ference tournament, putting together summer and winter clinics and hitting leagues, and helping to organize the first summer baseball league. “Bill loves the game of baseball,” Livingston wrote, “and he passes it on to every player he coaches—it has been a privilege to coach against and with Bill Girling.”

Tom Saunches—Argenta-Oreana
Saunches has been the skipper of Argenta-Oreana baseball for 25 years. During this time, the Bombers have won 414 games, 10 conference championships, 10 regional championships, and three sectional championships. Saunches, who has never had a losing season, will be joining his father Ray (DuQuinn High School), who was inducted into the IHSBCA Hall of Fame in 1979. Tom will be retiring following the 2009-2010 school year and his nominator, Brice Stewart had this to say about him: “Tom is a hall of fame teacher, coach, and individual, and this honor would be a fitting way to end his career.”

Blayne Smith—Cobden
Smith has been a head baseball coach for 31 years and in this span he has accumulated over 600 wins, 11 conference championships, nine conference tournament titles, six regional championships, and two sectional titles. The current Cobden skipper has also twice been named conference Coach of the Year and in May of 2006 had the varsity field named in his honor.

Algonquin teen, brother of late Angels pitcher, honored

Baseball in Illinois would like to share a courageous story from the Daily Herald about Henry Gigeous.

Jacobs High School assistant baseball coach John Sarna knows he'll never forget the steely determination and heart sophomore pitcher Henry Gigeous displayed last spring.

As a freshman, Gigeous took the field within hours of learning that his half brother and hero, 22-year-old Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, had been killed in a car crash.

Henry, of Algonquin, didn't stop there. Wearing a Jacobs ball cap with "NA 34" in honor of Adenhart's jersey number, Henry worked his way up to playing at the varsity level by the end of the season.

"He was able to keep playing, and stay not only with baseball but going to school and going through with life," Sarna said Monday. "He didn't take any time off from the team."

On Jan. 17 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Henry will be honored with the Bo Jackson Courage Award by the Chicago Pitch and Hit Club. Among the two dozen other individuals honored by the 64-year-old organization are Chicago Cubs Hall of Famers Ferguson Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg.

Adenhart died April 9 of injuries sustained when the car he was riding in was struck by a van that ran a red light in Fullerton, Calif., hours after his fourth Major League Baseball start. Two others in the car, including the driver, also were killed.

The driver of the van has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and felony drunken driving. His license had been suspended before the accident for a previous drunken driving conviction.

Jacobs varsity baseball coach Eric Sanders received a call from Henry's father, Duane, shortly after the family had heard the news.

Coaches told Henry the team was there for him. And Henry, in turn, was a steady presence for his team throughout the season.

"I just try to go out there and pitch like (Nick) would want me to," Henry told the Daily Herald last May. "Before the game I think of everything he gave to me and he taught me. I'm grateful for that. I feel blessed for 15 years to have a pitching mentor like that, and he was a very good one. I appreciate everything he did for me."

A board member of the Pitch and Hit Club, Sarna relayed the story of Henry's bravery at a monthly meeting, club President Peter Caliendo said.

The organization voted unanimously to give him the award.

"It's a moving story. We thought it would be fitting. Here's this local kid who has been through so much," Caliendo said.

Sanders said nearly all of Henry's varsity teammates will be on hand at the ceremony Jan. 17.

Courage: Vote to honor Gigeous was unanimous

RiverHawks Baseball Re-Sign Walker

LOVES PARK, Illinois - The Rockford RiverHawks' top base-stealing threat is coming back for another season.

The team announced Monday that it had re-signed infielder Jono Brooks. Brooks stole a team-high 30 bases and batted .221 with seven home runs and 27 RBI. Brooks was caught stealing just four times, a success rate of 88 percent, second in the Frontier League.

"Jono's always been one of my favorite players because he's real consistent with what he does," manager Bob Koopmann said. "He wants to play every day and he's in the lineup every day."

Brooks has been the team's starting shortstop since July 2007. In that time, he has a .948 fielding percentage. Brooks missed more than two weeks because of injury in 2008. Despite playing in seven more games in 2009, he committed six fewer errors and a career-best .961 fielding percentage. Brooks made just two errors in the season's first six weeks and committed a total of 16 for the season.

"His defense has improved every year he's been with us," Koopmann said. "I'm real glad that he's going to be back as a part of our ballclub."

Miners Acquire Ernie Banks

From Baseball in Illinois News Sources

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have acquired all-star first baseman Ernie Banks, one of the most feared hitters in the Frontier League, to their roster in a trade that sends all-star outfielder Stephen Holdren and reliever Derrick Miramontes to the River City Rascals.

Banks finished fourth in the league in batting average in 2009 with a .353 mark and led the league with a .668 slugging percentage. It was the former Marlins draft pick’s first season in the Frontier League. Despite only playing in 77 games, his 24 home runs ranked him fifth in the league as he was voted to the league’s postseason all-star team. Including shortstop Tony Roth and outfielder Joey Metropoulos, the Miners now have three of the nine hitters from that all-star list on their current roster.

“This is as big a deal as we have done with the Miners,” Manager Mike Pinto said. “And it’s a great trade for both teams. It brings us a bonafide middle of the order power hitter. Ernie not only hits for power but also for average and on-base percentage. Just as important, Ernie plays the game with intensity and with a will to win. He is very competitive, and I believe he will flourish here this season. As an LS-2 in our league, this is a great pick up for us.”

Banks hit .296 with a pair of home runs, five RBIs and 10 walks in nine games against Southern Illinois last year. In eight playoff games with the Rascals he hit .375 with three home runs and nine RBIs. He is a career .328 hitter with a .407 on-base percentage and will be 24 on Opening Day.

The Miners traded for Holdren this past July. Overall he hit .311 with 20 home runs and 56 RBIs in 2009. The three-time all-star has 63 career home runs, fifth most in Frontier League history. However, he has played more than three full professional seasons, which gives him a veteran status in the league, and prior to this trade the Miners were over the league limit of three veterans.

“I am a big fan of Stephen Holdren,” Pinto said, “and really don’t like trading him. I like him both personally and professionally. Unfortunately we have too many vets and are forced to move him. I wish him the best.”

Miramontes signed with the Miners as a rookie out of the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2009 but appeared in only seven games before he was traded to Shreveport-Bossier of the American Association. There he went 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA in 41 innings. He was reacquired by the Miners three weeks ago.

“I really didn’t like giving up Derrick in this trade,” Pinto said. “We really liked him, but the only way River City could do this deal was with a young arm included, and in the end I had to look at what is best for the Miners. I have confidence that Derrick will have success over there.”

The Miners will open the season on May 20 at home against River City.

CHICAGO ILLINOIS -- For the second straight offseason, the Cubs have signed an outfielder from the Texas Rangers, but this should be a better fit.

On Thursday, the Cubs inked free agent Marlon Byrd to a three-year, $15 million contract to fill their gap in center field. The deal is backloaded so Byrd will be paid $3 million in 2010, $5.5 million in 2011 and $6.5 million in 2012.
